The PAULING FILE project is a collaboration between Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST) and Material Phases Data System (MPDS). The project started in 1995. The Pauling File aims at a comprehensive materials database which covers all non-organic solid state materials and consists of structure, diffraction, constitution, and physical property data. It is named by the name of the famous chemist Linus C. Pauling, who gave his permission to use his name in 1993.
The source of Pauling File data are around 150,000 original publications taken from more than 1,000 scientific journals since 1900. The data are processed by an international, highly-experienced group of scientists a sophisticated data evaluation, standardization and derivation procedures.
The as-published data are accompanied by value-added information, such as calculated powder patterns (LAZY PULVERIX) and fully standardized structure data (STRUCTURE TIDY).

Online Pauling File
The present Pauling File includes about 80,000 structure entries, 34,000 diffraction entries, about 52,000 property data counts, about 6,000 constitution entries and 6,000 images of phase diagram. The data of binary composition is accomplished, while of multinary is at an underdeveloped stage.
This web-based system disseminates these four groups of data with the dynamic link between them. It also provides a design platform as a tool for data mining and materials design.

  Multinary Binary
Structure entries 80,000 28,000
Diffraction entries 34,000 28,000
Property data counts 52,000 42,000
Constitution entries 6,000 6,000
Images of phase diagram 6,000 6,000

Note: "Multinary" is inclusive of "Binary".
Main features of online Pauling File Data Search
  • From element - element map
  • From criteria (chemical system, some properties)
  • From constitution (phase diagram)
  • From simple conditions

Requirement for Hardware
  1. 64MB Ram or larger is expected.
  2. The Internet environment that can transport about 3MB data smoothly is expected.
Requirement for Software
  1. Displaying the phase diagram needs the SVG Viewer.
You can download the SVG Viewer according to your OS from the following site,
    SVG Viewer
  2. Displaying the crystal structure of the substance needs the viewer of crystal structure. Accelrys ViewerLite is the lightest one within several viewers. You can purchase Accelrys Viewer from the following site.
  3. Java Plug-in is necessary to use a database system when you are using Netscape Navigator. The latest version of JAVA Plug-in can be downloaded from the following page.(Windows only)
    JRE v.6
When you click on the continue button of the English page, License Agreement page is indicated. When you click on the accept button at the bottom of this page, download site page is indicated.Click on the download button of the site from there. Downloading begins.
Double-click on that file if you finish downloading. The installation of Plug-in begins.
Click on the Database(Plug-in) button of the top page in case of system use.
Confirmed Operation Environment

If your PC is running Windows Vista, some functions that require J2SE Runtime may not work properly (or at all). [Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 or Windows XP are recommended.]

At present (06/02/2003), we have confirmed the operation of the system in the following computer environment:
---Plug-in : JRE v 1.3.1_06, ---SVG Viewer : 3.0
